Hunger

Beastly, visceral hunger
That’s what it is
It grows fast and stays fast
A binding spell
This hunger casts
It blinds
It kills the little gray cells
It makes you drool
Salivate
And lose control
You need to feel the meat
To silence the voices in your head

But even then they don’t back down
“Go for it, let go,
You’re hungry, its not your fault”
Say the voices in your head
Follow their example
For they have silenced
One of their own
Can you hear your conscience?
...
That’s what I mean

You dig in, go deep
Soak up the juices
You don’t mind how the meat is dressed
Or if it is at all
It wouldn’t matter if it was lean
Or raw or laced with fat
Well done or rare

So when you eat
Don't you dare
Blame it on the dressing
You know you wanted it anyway
And nothing would have stopped you
Not even your conscience
For that died long ago

Unlike your hunger.
Life is so full of ups and downs
that sometimes when you
stop for a moment
all you can see is
people looking down at you.
Or on you.
People on a high,
while you tredge on below
Eyes watering silently
Against the downhill wind.
The ropes around you
Are safety tethers
At least that’s what they said
But every once in a while
The mist clears
The tears dry
Lips pursed, you realise
The tethers are chains
In disguise
And with the tying
They took away
All your knives
Who can cut them now?

Cut across a jagged rock
Scraping away for life
Then halfway through
The doubt seeps in
Without the tethers
Won’t you fall through?
From midway up to far below
The steep drop to the valley of lows
Maybe the tethers were good after all
Holding you there
A comfort, a safe place
And with this doubt
You start to embrace
The poison that got away

As a potion of health.
